Elbow Pain (Tennis & Golfer's Elbow)

Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow are overuse problems of the tendons around the elbow, and you do not have to play either sport to get them. Elbow pain physical therapy in Commack, NY at Sunshine Physical Therapy loads the tendon the right way and fixes the habits that keep irritating it.

Tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow: where it hurts

The side of the elbow that hurts tells you which tendon is involved.

Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)

Pain on the outside of the elbow, often with elbow pain when gripping, lifting a cup or turning a doorknob. It can spread into the forearm.

Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis)

Pain on the inside of the elbow, with forearm pain when you grip or twist.

Other elbow problems

Elbow bursitis, elbow tendinitis and cubital tunnel (an irritated ulnar nerve at the inside of the elbow, causing tingling in the ring and little fingers) can look alike. An evaluation sorts them out.

Why you do not need a racquet or a club

These tendons work every time you grip, type, lift or use tools. Painters, carpenters, desk workers and parents of toddlers get them. At work, the usual changes are to grip size, wrist position and pacing; see work injuries.

Wrist and hand problems that start below the elbow are covered on hand and wrist pain; shoulder problems on shoulder pain; sport-specific questions on sports injury rehab.

Why loading the tendon helps more than resting it

Complete rest often gives only short relief. The tendon heals better with the right amount of load. Treatment uses isometric and eccentric tendon loading, manual therapy, counterforce bracing and ergonomic training, and builds the load up as the tendon tolerates it.
